Converting DVD to YouTube for Free
There may come a time when a client would like you to upload some video to YouTube, or it could be that you are tech savvy enough and want to put your own videos online. It seems simple enough; go to YouTube, login and upload. Unfortunately when dealing with DVD media, it turns into a multistep process before you can press that shiny upload button.
YouTube provides some helpful advice with their online YouTube Handbook:
http://www.youtube.com/t/yt_handbook_produce
If you click on Best Formats for Uploading under “Uploading Advice” you will be presented with the following file guidelines:
- Video Format: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred
- Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9)
- Resolution: 640×360 (16:9) or 480×360 (4:3) recommended
- Audio Format: MP3 or AAC preferred
- Frames per second: 30
- Maximum length: 10 minutes (we recommend 2-3 minutes)
- Maximum file size: 1 GB
Free Tools for Video Conversion and Editing
SUPER© (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer)
SUPER is an excellent freeware video converter that gets the job done. You may download SUPER from the eRightSoft website: http://www.erightsoft.biz/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe
SolveigMM AVI Trimmer
Solveig Multimedia offers a free video trimmer/editor that handles AVI as well as MKV video files. You may download their software here: http://www.solveigmm.com/?Products&id=AVITrimmer#Download
Both of these pieces of software are what I call legitimate freeware. There are no intrusive ads, no spyware and no crippled features that force you into a license. If you like their software, I would highly recommend sending them a donation.
Converting your DVD Video to AVI

The first step is to fire up SUPER. Once it loads, in the bottom window where it states “drag a valid multimedia file here,” right-click and select “Add Multimedia Files.” Navigate to your DVD and find the VOB file, it should be in the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD and will be the largest file available.
I used the following settings: Output Container: AVI, Output Codec: H.264/AVC, Output Audio Codec: mp3, Video Size: 480×368, Aspect 4:3 and the rest I left as default. Feel free to play around with these settings. If your video is HD/widescreen you will want the 16:9 option at a resolution around 640px wide according to the YouTube guidelines. The process of converting the DVD to an AVI will take at least 10 minutes or so. Feel free to grab that cup of coffee now. For more information about using super, check out their FAQ – http://www.erightsoft.com/faqt.html , or read the introduction to SUPER article located here: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/introduction_to_super_html.cfm
Splitting your AVI into smaller parts

Once your DVD VOB file has been converted into an AVI, go ahead and play it and see how the conversion went. If you like what you see, then it’s time to load up SolveigMM AVI Trimmer.
Click the button next to the Source File input box and load your video in. The process is fairly simple, although it might take you a while to get used to the interface. Essentially you mark segments of your video and then click “Process” to save them out as individual AVI files. Our goal is to get each of these files under 10MB. For more detailed information on using the editor, visit the tutorial on the solveigmm website: http://www.solveigmm.com/HowTo/how-to-edit-your-movie-to-put-it-on-youtube-with-avi-trimmer
Time to Upload
Now, with all your video segments saved out, it’s time to upload them to YouTube. I hope you found this article informative on how to quickly convert DVD or extended play video files to smaller YouTube –friendly segments. While there may be other ways to achieve the same outcome, at least for me, this method is intuitive, quick and achieved without the investment of high-end software.
