Bitstorm Web recently developed and launched a website for Area 7 Workforce Investment Board. Area 7 is a customer-driven organization led by a business-based Workforce Investment Board. The Board is appointed by county commissioners to oversee Workforce Investment Act (WIA) programs in our member counties. They are made up of 11 One-Stop systems, which are comprised of 43 Ohio counties. Area 7 distributes funds and leverages additional resources to meet workforce needs wherever they exist, and strives to exceed federal performance standards.

Bitstorm web recently developed and launched a website for the Dayton – West Central Ohio Regional Extension Center (REC) or DWCO-REC for short. DWCO-REC is a partnership between the Greater Dayton Area Health Information Network (GDAHIN), the West Central Ohio Health Information Network (WCO HIE) and the Ohio Health Information Partnership (OHIP) with the purpose of helping physicians achieve meaningful use. This is accomplished through consulting services on topics such as Electronic Health Records (EHR), Health Information Exchange (HIE), Meaningful Use (MU) and ARRA funding. In addition, the REC will provide discounted rates on preferred EHRs, workflow and readiness assessment tools, loan programs and educational sessions.

The website was developed using the Joomla 1.5 CMS based on PHP/mySQL and features a members area for document delivery and collaboration.

There may come a time when a client would like you to upload some video to YouTube, or it could be that you are tech savvy enough and want to put your own videos online. It seems simple enough; go to YouTube, login and upload. Unfortunately when dealing with DVD media, it turns into a multistep process before you can press that shiny upload button.

YouTube provides some helpful advice with their online YouTube Handbook:
http://www.youtube.com/t/yt_handbook_produce

If you click on Best Formats for Uploading under “Uploading Advice” you will be presented with the following file guidelines:

Video Format: H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred

Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (examples: 4:3, 16:9)

Resolution: 640×360 (16:9) or 480×360 (4:3) recommended

Audio Format: MP3 or AAC preferred

Frames per second: 30

Maximum length: 10 minutes (we recommend 2-3 minutes)

Maximum file size: 1 GB

Free Tools for Video Conversion and Editing

SUPER© (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer)

SUPER is an excellent freeware video converter that gets the job done. You may download SUPER from the eRightSoft website: http://www.erightsoft.biz/GetFile.php?SUPERsetup.exe

SolveigMM AVI Trimmer

Solveig Multimedia offers a free video trimmer/editor that handles AVI as well as MKV video files. You may download their software here: http://www.solveigmm.com/?Products&id=AVITrimmer#Download

Both of these pieces of software are what I call legitimate freeware. There are no intrusive ads, no spyware and no crippled features that force you into a license. If you like their software, I would highly recommend sending them a donation.

Converting your DVD Video to AVI

The first step is to fire up SUPER. Once it loads, in the bottom window where it states “drag a valid multimedia file here,” right-click and select “Add Multimedia Files.” Navigate to your DVD and find the VOB file, it should be in the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD and will be the largest file available.

I used the following settings: Output Container: AVI, Output Codec: H.264/AVC, Output Audio Codec: mp3, Video Size: 480×368, Aspect 4:3 and the rest I left as default. Feel free to play around with these settings. If your video is HD/widescreen you will want the 16:9 option at a resolution around 640px wide according to the YouTube guidelines. The process of converting the DVD to an AVI will take at least 10 minutes or so. Feel free to grab that cup of coffee now. For more information about using super, check out their FAQ – http://www.erightsoft.com/faqt.html , or read the introduction to SUPER article located here: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/introduction_to_super_html.cfm

Splitting your AVI into smaller parts

Once your DVD VOB file has been converted into an AVI, go ahead and play it and see how the conversion went. If you like what you see, then it’s time to load up SolveigMM AVI Trimmer.

Click the button next to the Source File input box and load your video in. The process is fairly simple, although it might take you a while to get used to the interface. Essentially you mark segments of your video and then click “Process” to save them out as individual AVI files. Our goal is to get each of these files under 10MB. For more detailed information on using the editor, visit the tutorial on the solveigmm website: http://www.solveigmm.com/HowTo/how-to-edit-your-movie-to-put-it-on-youtube-with-avi-trimmer

Time to Upload

Now, with all your video segments saved out, it’s time to upload them to YouTube. I hope you found this article informative on how to quickly convert DVD or extended play video files to smaller YouTube –friendly segments. While there may be other ways to achieve the same outcome, at least for me, this method is intuitive, quick and achieved without the investment of high-end software.

Peppermint, or “Peppermint OS One” is a new Linux distribution focused on speed, user-friendly installation, small footprint and the integration of several cloud applications. I first heard about Peppermint through a tech magazine I periodically receive and decided to do a bit more research focusing on some independent reviews.

Peppermint OS has been brought to life by “Team Peppermint” and their lead software developer Kendall Weaver who affectionately refers to the Peppermint OS in it’s human form as an “Olympic sprinter with a marketing degree and (possibly) a coke problem.” Metaphors aside, the OS has made a heavy impact with over 55,000 downloads since the middle of May 2010 through the first of June.

What makes Peppermint OS special?

Speed

Peppermint OS is extremely fast using only 82Mb of system memory on a standard install! If the default memory consumption isn’t enough to make you drool, check out the compiled stats sheet:

Default memory usage

82Mb

Boot-up to login

25 seconds

Login to usable desktop

< 5 seconds

Shutdown

4 seconds

Cloud Applications

Peppermint has a variety of non-installed web apps served up via Mozilla’s Prism technology. Below is a list of the default cloud applications you’ll discover.

Editor by Pixlr

Facebook

Hulu

Last.FM

Pandora

Seesmic Web

The Cloud Player

YouTube

Google Calendar

Google Docs

Google Mail

Google Reader

Note: Peppermint is the first operating system to include Seesmic by default.

Price, Footprint, Installation & Requirements

Peppermint OS uses the popular LiveCD for installation. Download the ISO, burn to CD, boot and enjoy! The ISO file weighs in at a mere 427.5MB and the install takes less than 15 minutes!

Price

FREE

Distribution

LiveCD Disk Image (ISO)

ISO size

427.5 Mb

Installation time

< 15 minutes

Minimum processor

i386 or derivative processor

Minimum memory

256Mb

Recommended storage

4 Gb (overestimated)

Other notable applications

Although this is a cloud-centric Linux distro, it is built around LXDE “Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment” and does come with a number of “installed” applications. I’ve listed just a few in the table below.

PCManFM (File Manager)

Galculator (lightweight calculator)

Leafpad (text editor)

Firefox Browser

Asunder (CD burner)

Transmission (bittorrent client)

Drop-Box

Exaile for Music Mangement

Prism

X-Chat

Banshee Audio Player

What’s not to like?

With speed, cloud applications, stability and minimal requirements being the strong points of Peppermint OS, you might wonder what may not work so well. The answer in short is “not much.” The operating system is extremely fast, snappy and stable. Out of the numerous reviews from which I gleaned information, most of the initial complaints have been corrected. There were some initial reports of outdated software (PCManFM / Songbird) which seems to have been corrected. One reviewer mentioned a slideshow during installation would have been nice, and there were perhaps some font sizing issues on some menus, but overall, this seems to be a rock-solid OS.

Closing comments

I’ve been wrestling with the idea of reformatting my aging laptop for a while now, and Peppermint OS has made me seriously rethink another Windows install. With its minimal system requirements and unbridled speed it is the clear winner for a mobile environment such as a laptop or netbook. Although suited well for a minimalistic OS, nothing prevents you from loading it up from a large pool of available applications and moving it more towards a standard desktop OS. To quote Trent from “The Linux Critic”, “Choice and flexibility are beautiful things. Ultimately it means that the user – any user – has power to make their computing experience what they want it to be, what they need it to be, and that’s what it should be.”

With our deed in hand, a digital camera, measuring tape and a little bit of time, the TDH staff set forth to stake our claim on Google Earth. In case you are unfamiliar with the application, Google Earth was launched in 2005 and lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings and more! The free application has been growing in popularity since its release and is now available as a web browser plug-in and even as an iPhone App.

Fire up your Google Earth application, do a search for TDH Marketing in Dayton, Ohio and view our building in all its 3D glory!

Flash banner ads are everywhere, and if you have even a little bit of experience with Adobe Flash, you may be tasked with creating an online advertisement. If the ad is fairly simple with little content and/or imagery you will probably have little to no problem meeting file size restrictions. On the flip side, clients may have an abundance of information and want an exciting ad that seems impossible to squeeze into 40k!

Squeezing out those final kilobytes

Step 1: Cutting Back

Don’t be afraid to cut out fluff. The client may want 10 photos, where maybe 2-3 will get the message across. There may be room to tighten up copy and/or the number of transitions in the ad. As always, keep an open line of communication with your client. Explain to them the steps you have taken to conserve file size and why things will need to be cut to meet file size restrictions.

Step 2: Go Vector if Possible

Vector graphics are incredibly small compared to raster images.

A little explanation:

Vector graphics is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon(s), which are all based on mathematical equations, to represent images in computer graphics.

A raster graphics image or bitmap is a data structure representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color, viewable via a monitor, paper, or other display medium.

Since vector graphics are math based, they offer not only tiny file size, but scalability without loss of quality. Vector images are not suitable however, for displaying continuous tone images (i.e. digital photographs).

So, if you go with a banner ad design that is comprised of more line art / vector illustration rather than digital photography, you are already saving yourself a ton of space!

Note: If using logos, try to get them from the client as a vector eps or Adobe Illustrator file. Illustrator vector files import directly into Flash.

Step 3: Avoid Embedded Fonts

Unless you are using standard system fonts to display text for your banner ad, you will probably want to break your fonts down into vector graphics. Honestly, you are going to save file size doing this, even if they are standard fonts. To convert your font to a vector, please follow these steps:

Lay down your text using the Flash Text Tool

With your text selected use the “Break Apart” command: Modify->Break Apart or CNTRL-B two times. The first time breaks the text line into individual letters, the second time breaks those letters down into vector shapes.

Step 4: Compress PNG Graphics (When using Raster)

Once your raster graphics are imported into Flash, they are handled as bitmaps. A bitmap or pixmap is a type of memory organization or image file format used to store digital images. Flash allows two distinct ways to control the handling of your raster graphics:

Photo (JPEG)

Lossless (PNG/GIF)

Once your image has been imported into the Flash Library, double click on it to bring up the image properties. From here you can tell Flash how you would like your image to be handled. For the most part, I like using PNG graphics with Flash. They allow you to use transparency without anti-aliasing artifacts.

When dealing with photos, I use the Photo (JPEG) compression method. If you uncheck “use document default quality” you can then specify the quality of the image by entering a number between 0 and 100. By pressing the “Test” button you can visually see how it will affect your image and get a compression status report!

When dealing with Lossless compression, the file savings are not as significant, unless you are using a tiny PNG or GIF with a limited color palette. If you are using a very simple image with only a few colors, it may be better to convert the image to a vector graphic using a tool like Adobe Illustrator, or converting the image right in Flash.

When it comes to PNG compression, here are some tools that can help:

In Photoshop, always use “Save as Web & Devices” Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S. It affords you more control over the output size and quality of your image.

PunyPNG is a free online PNG compressor, although sometimes the site is down which can cause frustration.

PNGGauntlet is a desktop PNG compressor that is also free.

Step 5: Graphic Consolidation Trick

This technique I’ve found saves quite a bit of file size. For this example I’m going to use three images that fade in across the Flash timeline in a 300×250 pixel stage.

For the first movie, I’ve imported my three graphics into the library, added them to the stage and created the fade-in effect. I also set my compression at 50% for these three images. My resulting movie comes out to be 11k. This does not seem like a very large file, however, imagine that this is a 40k ad. Approximately 27% has already been used!

For the consolidation trick, it is assumed you know how to use masks and work with movie clips in Flash. Instead of the three images being imported into Flash I’ve consolidated them into one, as seen below:

Now, I’m going to create three movie clips which will use the same source image as the consolidated graphics. I will place a mask above the photo layer and isolate the graphic I wish to use.

Once I have my movie clips completed, I place them on the stage, create the identical fade-in effect and publish my movie. The size is only 8.55k! By using the same photos in a single image and isolating them with masks, I’ve saved 6% of my file size and I did not have to degrade the image with additional compression.

The Skinny

The techniques listed above can be applied to any Flash application to reduce file size and load time. If you’ve tried these techniques or any other techniques you may have run across and still cannot hit your file size target, please revisit Step 1.
